Parramatta. OK for $18.6 million project

A DA has been approved for the construction of a 12 storey mixed use development comprising 84 apartments, 4 home offices and commercial tenancies over two levels of basement carparking with strata subdivision, at 188 George Street, Parramatta.. The estimated cost of construction is $18.6 million.

Wentworthville. Sold for $27 million

Pacific Brands has sold its Bonds factory at Wentworthville for $27 million. It will generate a one-off sale profit of about $11 million for the company. The property is on the Holroyd City Council’s heritage list.as it contains working examples of 1920s factory construction.

North Ryde. Launch of LOTUS program

Premier Barry O’Farrell, has launched the Leadership Opportunities Transforming University Students (LOTUS) scholarship program, heralding a new era in human capital development between Australia and China. Xstrata, one of the world’s largest mining and metals companies, will be the first signatory to the scholarship program, to be run by the university Through the LOTUS program, Macquarie will partner with Australian organisations to identify future business leaders and provide a learning experience that is integrated with industry skills and knowledge.

Region. Lack of economic strategy

An Urban Taskforce Australia report says planning for jobs in Sydney’s fastest growing region, Western Sydney, appears to have been given relatively little energy at the policy level in the past. Jobs growth in Western Sydney over the past 20 years has been driven primarily by population growth and the flow on effects from generally positive economic conditions across the broader Sydney metropolitan area and the nation, rather than through any specific economic development strategy.

Region. Identity overshadowed

The global dominance of images of Sydney that are based in Eastern Sydney over shadow the identity of Western Sydney. “It is extraordinary that although Western Sydney comprises the majority of Sydney’s land footprint, is home for over half of Sydney’s population and is Australia’s third largest city, it does not have a strong identity in its own right – or comprise part of the identity of Sydney,” according to a report prepared for the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) by Strategies for Change and ARUP.

Badgerys Creek. An ideal location

The Badgerys Creek site could be developed to the region’s advantage, according to a report prepared for the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) by Strategies for Change and ARUP. In addition to the agricultural value of the land, the area, which has served primarily as farmland since European occupancy, has proximity to regional freight links, manufacturing hubs and Liverpool making it an ideal location for a new commercial, industrial and residential centre.
